About Sa'id

Map showing refugee camps where Sa'id was as a child.

Sa'id was born in Kismayo, Somalia, south of the capital city Mogadishu. His family was part of the Bantu community. As a young child, Sa'id fled his home country after seeing his father murdered during the Somali civil war. After six years in Kenyan refugee camps, he resettled in Texas with his mother and siblings. Immigration authorities sought to deport him back to Somalia after he had run-ins with the law. He now lives outside Boston with his wife Janene, their two kids, and her two boys. He is one of two men whose story is told in SHACKLED.
